This painting is a copy after a print by Aegidius Sadeler after a design by Roelandt Savery (plate: 162 x 223 mm; Hollstein XXI, no. 224; Illustr. Bartsch, vol. 72/01, Aegidius Sadeler, no. 232).
There is another painted copy with different staffage figures, a Flight to Egypt, in the Städel Museum, Frankfurt (inv. no. 1218). Agnes Tietze listed the painting as „Follower of Jan Brueghel the Younger“, but did not recognized the dependence on the print.
